Anthropic announced today that Mariano-Florentino (Tino) Cuéllar will join the company as its first Chief Global Affairs Officer. In this new role, Cuéllar will oversee Anthropic's policy work, strategic international engagement, and relationships with governments worldwide.
Cuéllar brings a distinguished career spanning law, technology, and public service. He recently stepped down as president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and previously served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of California. His career also includes roles at Stanford University, where he directed the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and co-directed the Center for International Security and Cooperation, as well as service on the President's Intelligence Advisory Board and the State Department's Foreign Affairs Policy Board.
In a statement, Cuéllar emphasized the critical moment for AI governance: "Policymakers in the US and around the world are increasingly realizing that we are at a critical inflection point when it comes to how we govern and develop artificial intelligence. The choices we make today will determine whether humanity can harness extraordinary possibilities to advance science and improve lives across the world or face enormous risk and growing inequality."
Anthropic's president, Daniela Amodei, praised Cuéllar's judgment and civic-mindedness, saying, "I can't think of anyone better prepared to partner with governments, civil society, and community groups as they engage with both the risks and opportunities presented by advanced AI."
Cuéllar has served as a trustee of Anthropic's Long-Term Benefit Trust since January 2026 and has stepped down from that role to join the company. The Trust will select a successor under its normal process.
