Anthropic's new Life Sciences Verification Program grants vetted life science organizations access to Mythos, Opus, and Sonnet models with more permissive biology safeguards, shifting enforcement from real-time blocking to offline monitoring.

Anthropic Launches Life Sciences Verification Program for Biotech and Pharma Teams

Key points

Anthropic has introduced the Life Sciences Verification Program (LSVP), a beta initiative that gives verified life science professionals access to its Mythos, Opus, and Sonnet models with a refined set of safeguards that are more permissive for biology-related work. The company said it has already onboarded dozens of organizations through an early access phase and is now opening applications to the broader life science community.

The program is aimed at tasks currently blocked in Anthropic's generally available Fable models, including drug discovery, research biology, clinical development, and manufacturing. It is designed for teams ranging from academic labs and startups to pharmaceutical companies. Applicants undergo verification covering research credentials, security standards, and ethical research oversight.

Verified teams can apply for two grant types. Standard Use grants cover most life science work, can be extended to entire teams, and are renewed annually; they apply to Mythos 5.1, Opus 5, and Sonnet 5 today, as well as future models. High-risk Use is an add-on grant for work blocked under Standard Use, removes all life-science-related safeguards, applies to a single research project, and must be renewed every six months. High-risk grants for Opus 5 and Sonnet 5 are available now, while Mythos high-risk grants remain limited to a small set of entities pending work with the US government.

Anthropic said the safeguards are built around shared responsibility, with each entity's access tied to use cases specified in its grant application and continuous monitoring of LSVP traffic for activity outside the stated safe scope. The company is shifting from real-time blocking to offline monitoring to better detect misuse spread across many requests and sessions, requiring 30-day data retention for LSVP traffic. That data is compartmentalized and cannot be used for model training or accessed by Anthropic's life sciences research teams.

LSVP is available in Anthropic's first-party console for API usage and in Claude for Enterprise and Team plans. It is not yet available for individual plans or third-party platforms, and as a beta it is not available for BAA-enabled organizations, meaning customers with PHI data should use separate non-BAA, non-HIPAA orgs. In API and Claude Science, users can switch between grants natively; in Claude.ai and Claude Code, only a preselected default grant applies initially.
