Anthropic has announced a focused call for applications under its AI for Science program, specifically targeting rare genetic disease research. The initiative will provide selected applicants with up to $50,000 in Claude API credits over six months, aiming to build a community of researchers exploring how AI can advance understanding of rare diseases.
The program features two tracks: one for basic science researchers and another for early-stage biotech companies working to accelerate clinical development for rare diseases. Anthropic notes that rare diseases collectively affect an estimated 400 million people worldwide, spanning more than 7,000 conditions, but research is hampered by small patient populations and fragmented data.
Track one focuses on scaling basic science partnerships, including collaboration with the Monarch Initiative, which develops resources like the Mondo Disease Ontology and the Monarch Knowledge Graph. Monarch's new DisMech library uses Claude to read case reports and variant databases, identifying mechanistic similarities between diseases at scale.
Track two supports biotechnologists and startups aiming to compress drug development timelines. Anthropic highlights that moving from genetic diagnosis to treatment currently takes one to two years, with bottlenecks in manufacturing, safety testing, and regulatory documentation. Claude could help by drafting regulatory dossiers, analyzing druggability across modalities, and identifying shared mechanisms for basket trials.
Existing grantees include Every Cure, which uses Claude for drug repurposing; the Centre for Population Genomics, which drafts variant classifications; and the Violet Research Institute, which navigates FDA guidelines and runs bioinformatics pipelines. Applications are open until August 2, 2026, at 11:59 PM PST.
